Rapid recovery

‘I was delighted to be without sticks and back driving after only two weeks.’
Patient testimonial

In 2004, I developed the UK’s first Rapid Recovery programme for hip replacements. The principles that informed my approach then are the same that underpin the rapid recovery programmes used throughout the UK today – a focus on improving every step of the patient’s journey, from surgery to recovery.

Back in 2004, it was normal for patients to stay in hospital for up to nine days following hip replacement surgery. My pioneering, minimally-invasive surgical techniques and rapid recovery programme changed the expectation for patients, who now typically return home just one to two days after surgery.

More about your patient journey

A revolution in patient care

I realised the best patient outcomes are achieved when surgical excellence is combined with a specialist, team-working approach. By bringing the same quality of care to preoperative and postoperative care, we’ve been able to revolutionise the patient experience, from pre-assessment to discharge.

My goal when treating patients is to minimise the recovery time taken, while maximising the benefit surgery brings, to help patients regain full hip function and return to the things they love – whether that’s skiing, tennis or getting back to their gardens.

We’re an ageing population so demand for hip replacement surgery is increasing – in the words of one incredible 101-year-old patient, “I have things I need to do!”

Patient Progress

One of the most satisfying aspects of my work is seeing first-hand the real-world benefits that minimally-invasive surgery can bring.

The following videos were sent to me by some of my patients, to show their progress at various stages of their recovery.

Orthopaedic consultant Albert was a colleague of mine for many years, so when he needed a double hip replacement, I was delighted he put his trust in me.

Here he is 48 hours after surgery and able to climb stairs unassisted and with minimal pain.
